Antizionism killed Bondi Jews.

Antizionists gunned down Jews at Bondi Beach on Sunday. As a nation we let this happen, and now Australia’s Jews taste more grief and despair. Australians must understand that antizionism is not criticism of Israel, but the call for its elimination. This extremist ideology must be subject to the same harm minimisation principles we apply elsewhere.

In November, the Australian media was united in condemning a Nazi rally outside the NSW parliament. We deal with Nazis because we understand the harm they promise to cause.

We remember Nazi Germany as if it had descended upon the population like a dark cloud, fighting its way into the fabric of German politics, institutions and national aspirations like a cancer. But a decade before the gas chambers, Nazism resembled many of today’s utopian social justice movements. It announced itself as proudly and promisingly as daybreak on a nation desperate to recover from the demoralisation of World War I and the subsequent failure of Weimar democracy.

This movement positioned itself as a solution, one of national pride and moral weight. European antisemitic libels constructed Jews as a racially impure network of thick-haired, hook-nosed foreigners quietly doing the bidding of a powerful, nefarious and corrupt Jewish cabal. Nazism turned Jews into enemies of the state and their elimination as a moral cause.

The antizionist crusade against the Jewish state is also predicated on libels. Just as antisemitism is not a critique or a response to Jews, antizionism is not a critique of Zionism. Both present themselves as rational, moral responses to evil.

Unlike antisemitic libels – which focus on the Jewish collective – antizionism focuses on the Jewish state, established after six million Jews were murdered. Antizionism defaces Jewish self-determination using three key libels: genocide, apartheid and colonialism.

The genocide libel inverts the Holocaust, referring to the inception of Israel as the beginning of a genocide. The apartheid libel insists a Jewish state cannot produce racial equality. The colonialism libel renders Israel both a Western puppet and, simultaneously, the West’s puppet master, whereby its very existence as a “colonial entity” embodies what so many in the West deem to be the root of all modern injustice.

Antizionists consider dead Jews justified collateral in the greater mission of undoing the Zionist threat. The writing has been on the wall for a while; our mistake was not believing it.

Whether the target is the Jew or their state, both need to be removed on moral grounds. These movements are morally attached to their own libellous constructions of their enemies, and this moral fervour leads to their bigotry being mistaken for righteousness by the broader public.

Synagogues have been burned down on five continents. These attacks, along with the firebombing of homes, vandalism, attacks on Jewish MPs’ offices, harassment of Jews on university campuses and the ostracism of Jews in the arts are all the work of antizionists.

Why do we treat Nazis differently to antizionists? Antizionism is no less libellous, conspiratorial and violent than antisemitism. Poland’s 1968 antizionist purge saw at least 13,000 Jews removed from the state. Antizionists carried out October 7.

Antizionist agitators such as Hoda Afshar and Randa Abdel-Fattah have tried to purge Australia’s arts and culture of “Zionists”. Antizionists gunned down Jews celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. Antizionism saw almost a million Mizrahi Jews displaced since the Holocaust. What more evidence do we need that this movement causes harm? This mind-virus denies the legitimacy of Jewish collective self-determination itself, justifying the elimination of a Jewish state with libel no different to the Nazis’ justification of the elimination of Jews using libel. Antizionism is not a position on what Israel does, but merely that Israel is.

What this country bans Nazis from doing, we green-light among antizionists. We doll it up as academia, artistic expression, progressive zeal or harmless populism. But this movement is anything but benign. Its relentless conspiratorial campaign against Jewish nationhood warps the better angels of the West’s nature, convincing us to march in our thousands against the Jewish state while her enemy hoards baby formula and executes hostages.

We in the West have been educated to assume collective guilt for our own forefathers’ sins. Antizionism’s “anti-colonial” libel gives us a path to atone. Through an (ironically) interventionist obsession with re-carving up the Levant, antizionism performs the roles of both psychological salve and spiritual salvation. Instead of crucifying a single Jew for the sins of mankind, the Western antizionist seeks salvation through the crucifixion of the Jewish state.

And for some reason our organisations, institutions, governments and courts still think harm minimisation measures can only be put in place when antizionism crosses some invisible line into antisemitism. Why?

Whether it is an upside-down red triangle or a swastika, the symbol painted on the brick hurled through a shop front doesn’t make it less serious. And now the antizionists are murdering Jews in broad daylight in Sydney. If you’re still splitting hairs, consider Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Antizionism is no longer in the water. It is the water, and it’s now causing more harm to Jews in Australia than Nazism is. That’s not because it’s worse – it’s because it has gone misunderstood for far too long to be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

To the Jews of Australia, and to the families of the deceased, I wish you long life. To everyone else: this is what ignoring antizionism looks like. It must stop.
