Why I stopped defending "Zionism"*

A 10 minute explanation of the difference between political criticism and abuse

You can listen to For Normal People on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

And here’s the video…

I don’t ‘defend’ Israel or Zionism to antizionists. This is something I stopped doing in 2025. But it wasn’t until I did a Movement Against Antizionism training that it was fully explained to me why something inside me had realised how futile it is. I’d wasted too many hours explaining “Zionism” and “Israel” in the same way one might explain “Semitism” to a Nazi antisemite in the 1930s.

The antisemite doesn’t actually engage with “semitism”. Neither does the antizionist engage with “Zionism”. The antijudaist with Judaism? Not in the slightest.

Clarifying the meaning of the word they use to describe their hate object is very often pointless.

Facts and logic don’t work against antizionists because antizionism is not a product of facts or logic. Attempting to defend against abuse by ‘de-bunking’ antizionist claims does not work. Name the abuse. Reveal that we are dealing with libels and conspiracies designed not to clarify, but to stigmatise.

I recorded this off-the cuff a while ago, but never really knew what to do with it. I hope you enjoy my very, very cringe editing skills.

Check out these substacks. They’ve revolutionised the way I deal with bigotry.
